The ball python (Python regius), also nicknamed the royal python, is a species of python that is found within the grasslands, shrublands, and open forests from West and Central Africa. It is the smallest of the African pythons, reaching a length of 182 centimeters (72 inches). Its name comes from its tendency to curl into a ball when it is stressed or frightened. This methode of defense is employed instead of biting, making it a docile animal. The ball python is a nocturnal hunter, eating small mammals and birds.
